God With Us

We are vacationing this week in sunny south Florida – along with hundreds, if not thousands, of octogenarians and their friends. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed doing just about nothing every single day. I did muster up enough strength to get a pedicure on Day One – one of the best I’ve ever had I might add. Robin, the nail specialist, raved about Siesta Key (America’s #1 Beach), Saint Armands Circle (an upscale roundabout in Lido Beach), Bob’s Train, and invited us to her family’s Christmas Eve party at a playground at the beach.

3527738799_aa9db5e435_mRobin also mentioned that her 18 year old daughter has been full of anxiety lately due to the shootings in Connecticut and the Mayan Calendar’s prediction of the end of the world. We talked about God and Jesus and I explained that the Bible is a good book to read in times of trouble. She text me last night and wondered which version – she’s buying one for her daughter for Christmas. I can’t help but think Robin’s a little worried too. And, who wouldn’t be?

We live in desperate times, which is why the promise of a Savior – Immanuel, God With Us – brings such hope. His very name, God With Us, brings comfort. God, who never changes, is with us. God, who is all together good and whose lovingkindness never ends, is with us; God, who completely forgives, is with us. God, who rules the Universe, is with us; God who knows all things, is with us. God, who is all powerful, is with us. God who knows the beginning from the end and all things in-between, is with us. God, who is called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty, is with us.

Immanuel is hope sure and steadfast, an anchor; love without condition, rich and lavish; joy full and pure; peace, deep and penetrating.  No wonder we worship, no wonder we celebrate, no wonder we rest. He is with us.

“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace…”(Isaiah 9:6-7).
